LETTER: Support the fishermen

I had the opportunity to attend a meeting of local lobster fishermen at the community centre here in Shelburne on January 12th. I wanted to hear first hand from those involved in the industry about the challenges they face in the present marketplace. Like many others, I have heard of the struggles they face in an industry that is regulated by governments and dominated by buyers and brokers who control prices paid to fishermen.

As an economist and local resident, it is clear to me that this industry is the lifeblood of many in our communities throughout the region. The money fishermen spend on gear, equipment, supplies and the people they employ has to come from the money they get paid for the lobster the catch and bring to the dock. Lower prices simply means less money for them to live on and less money for them to employ people and buy goods and services in our communities.

As I watched the meeting unfold, I was embarrassed to see local men and women who contribute so much to our community's economy and well-being, forced to continue their struggle without the support of local business or government. Imagine my surprise when I learned that this local organization of lobster fishermen had to pay the Town of Shelburne $350 plus tax to hold a two hour meeting for the rental of our community meeting hall! It was reported that the Rodd Grand (a commercial facility in Yarmouth) only charged $150. In addition, the Rodd Grand provided coffee, tea, water and a sound system, none of which were supplied at our community hall.

In addition to this letter to the Editor, I am writing to the Mayor and Council in hopes that they will move quickly to find ways to support our local lobster fishermen in this effort. Money siphoned out of their pockets represents a loss to them as well as to businesses and members of our communities. Let's get behind them in their struggle before they and we lose this important industry.

Sincerely,
