Whirligig Festival

Saturday, September 15, 2012 to Sunday, September 16, 2012

|
Sept 15 & 16 - 2012

Build them and we will come!

The 13th Annual Whirligig & Weathervane Festival is slated for the Historic Waterfront in Shelburne on September 15 & 16 and the committee behind the event is looking for a few good men - and women!

"We've been having great Festivals on the waterfront for 13 years now and it is a great place for folks of all ages to display their ingenuity and humour," says Penny Smith, one of the Festival organizers. "We always have great cash and other prizes and we're looking for a few new builders to push the competition - and crowd-pleasing appeal - a little higher."

SHOW ME THE MONEY
The Festival is the first-ever of its kind in
North America and the theme this year is "Pirates". In recent years, more than 1000 visitors voteD in the popular “People’s Choice” award and more than $1500 in prizes are awarded. The organizers are especially interested in attracting more whirligig builders to this year's Festival. There is a popular youth category and a category for people who have never entered a whirligig or weathervane before.  The show attracts entrants who have been making whirligigs for years, as well as pure novices. Some enter only one “gig” and some put forward several. No more than two prizes each year are awarded any whirligig builder and previous winning entries may be displayed, but are not eligible for prizes.

This year's Festival also features an expanded program, including whirligig building workshops. Judging for the Festival awards is an important part of the process and, over the years, judges have included noted artists from the area and media personalities, as well as civic and community leaders.
